Thornbury Lawn Tennis Club has 10 teams of 4 players in the LTA Avon Summer Leagues: five men’s and four ladies. There are six teams in each league with each team playing each other both home and away. Each match comprises 4 individual matches or ‘rubbers’ – all doubles. The top teams contain County level players and the lower teams include developing players gaining valuable experience of league tennis. This allows players of all standards to enjoy some competitive tennis. The league season is now complete and Thornbury Lawn Tennis Club has been represented by a total of 60 players.
The five men’s teams compete in divisions 2 to 9. The Club is fortunate to have a group of talented juniors. These have been paired with experienced players to help them develop to their maximum potential.
The star performers were the Men’s seconds. They were on course for winning the league, but one of our players was unable to complete the final match due to illness. The team still finished second in the league and will be promoted. Congratulations to Luke Johnson, Wayne Russell, Josh White, Malcolm Worster, Mike Peathyjohns and Nick Mason who were the backbone of this team. The juniors played well with strong contributions from Luke Johnson, Kyle Broadley, Leo Lazarides and Charlie Cook.
The Ladies teams performed well with three of the teams finishing in mid-table. The Ladies Seconds performed strongly and were placed second in the league, earning promotion. Congratulations to Rae Bezuidenhout, Carole Boulton, Linda Mantle and Claire Hawkins who were the mainstays of the team. The junior pairing of Brooke Daunton and Susanna Ogden won 11 of their 12 matches playing together for the seconds and thirds. These young ladies have become excellent tennis players and great ambassadors for the Club.
